Dir. Matthew Heineman | 2017 | USA | Documentary | 92 mins | DCP | English | M18 – Violence

City of Ghosts takes a behind-the-scenes look at the work of a coalition of Syrian citizen journalists called Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently (RBSS). These brave men risk their lives to document the unreported atrocities committed by the Islamic State in their hometown of Raqqa. Facing persecution by ISIS, the documentary follows their journey as asylum-seekers, capturing the intense emotions of hope and fear that ensue.

Because foreign and local media outlets encounter extreme difficulty in reporting from the ground in Raqqa, RBSS serves as a crucial link to the outside world. The riveting footage that RBSS captures reveals the deplorable living conditions and numerous human rights abuses faced by the citizens of Raqqa under ISIS rule. In 2015, RBSS received the International Press Freedom Award from the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) for their brave efforts.

Directed by Matthew Heineman, known for powerful documentaries like Cartel Land (2015), City of Ghosts reveals the terror of religious extremism and the perils of citizen journalism, where personal stakes are caught up in a web of a larger political crisis. It is a definitive encapsulation of the destruction of Syria—from the beginnings of the Arab Spring, to the fall of the Assad regime, and to the takeover of Raqqa by ISIS forces.
