  • Film Short Description:

A teenager from Montreal rediscovers her mother’s painful, hidden past from a trove of memorabilia that dates back to the Lebanese Civil War.

    Main Summary:

Memory Box throws its viewers daringly into a dizzying kaleidoscope of youthful mirth and chaos. Stumbling upon a mysterious parcel containing diaries written in the 1980s, photographs and paraphernalia, a teenage girl, Alex, pieces together her mother Maia’s secret past. Images veer from Maia’s giddy love life and her carefree days where she could dance with unbridled abandon to the Lebanese Civil War where imminent violence and national anxieties dim the shine of her youth.

A moving portrait of love and loss, Memory Box unveils the power of photography in capturing key snapshots in history. Photographs transcend temporal decay and the failings of memory, immortalising scenes as if time stood still. Whether these prints evoke juvenile exhilaration or ground its characters in troubled currents of reality, they chronicle lived experiences that remain deeply etched in the minds of its people.

The intergenerational drama was the first Lebanese film to be nominated in the Berlinale’s main competition for forty years. Past and present entwine in an epistolary narrative constructed by the directors’ own cassette tapes and photographs of Beirut, transposing reality into art.
