  • Film Short Description:

It is 2163 – 40 crew members embark on a mission in search of extraterrestrial life. In this retro-futuristic sci-fi film that inspired Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, characters confront threats to their health and sanity.

    Main Summary:

Adapted from science-fiction author Stanisław Lem’s seminal work, The Magellanic Cloud (1955), Ikarie XB-1 is a Czechoslovakian film that revolves around humanity’s fictional search for aliens. The film takes place in the year 2163 when a team boards the Ikarie starship and ventures into the nearby star Alpha Centauri. Trapped by the perplexing physics of time, the explorers’ 28-month voyage stretches into 15 years on Earth – warping their conception of reality and time. Along their arduous journey in space, the crew encounter fragments of past excursions and are forced to face different biohazards in unknown territory.

What does the dilation of time entail for human relationships? How did the Czech in 1963 envision our future in space to be? Almost 60 years later, Ikarie XB-1 remains a thought-provoking piece of art. It takes us back to how technological advancements predicted by humans—quaint, rickety robots and toy-like beeping sounds—stand at odds with our AI-driven reality.

Presented in a new 4K restoration, the film has remained influential in inspiring Stanley Kubrick’s magnum opus—2001: A Space Odyssey.
