Last Trip Home
Dir. Han Fengyu l 2014 l Singapore l 25 mins l PG13 (Some Violence) l In Chinese with English subtitles
Profoundly quiet and meditative, Last Trip Home tells the story of a Chinese immigrant father and son whose roles seem inverted, as they battle the storms of being homeless in the city. Clearly displaced out of their natural environment, they only wish to find their way home, using their only possession, a car.
With its deliberate camera techniques, the film is an atypical take on the undying love between father and son, and their shared nostalgia for the happier, simpler times.
The film was the first Singaporean student film to screen at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival Cinefondation Selections and was nominated for the prestigious Cinefondation Award. Last Trip Home was named the Best Fiction Film at 2015 Singapore Short Film Awards, and also nominated for the Best Southeast Asian Short Film at the 2014 Singapore International Film Festival, where it premiered.
