The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

Stephan Elliott (1994)

“Beneath the wigs, the film is about quintessential Australian values: self-deprecation, blunt humour and determination in the face of adversity”
- Luke Buckmaster, The Guardian

Two drag queens and an ageing transsexual woman go on an emotional, comedic road trip, journeying towards a remote town for a performance and a great revelation. Crossing the great Australian Outback in a tour bus christened “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert”, they cross paths with fellow wayfarers — many unwarrantedly hostile, but some of whom alter the trio’s lives completely.

Armed with a fiery passion for performance and a dazzling wardrobe, the vivacious protagonists confront bigotry in a world predicated against those who dare to express their true selves. Elliott’s refreshingly positive and sassy portrayal of LGBT individuals serves as a critical eye-opener for the masses.

The Adventures Of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert won an Oscar and a BAFTA award for Best Costume Design. The film was also nominated for Best Motion Picture (Comedy/Musical) at the Golden Globes. Ever since, it has gained a remarkable cult following, and is now one of the most quirky and impressive of Australian films to emerge from the 1990s.
